Black Minorcas

Black Minorcas were brought to England in the 1800’s from the island of Minorca in the Mediterranean off the coast of Spain. Black Minorca chicks are black with white wing tips, chests and abdomens. They have single combs and clean, black and white legs and feet. The plumage of adult males and females is greenish black, and they have large white earlobes. Like other black varieties, Black Minorcas may have some white plumage from hatch until the time they are fully mature. Once mature, female Minorcas are very good producers of large white eggs.

The Buttercup chicken was reportedly imported to America in 1835 and not until 1918 admitted to the American Standard of Perfection. The Sicilian Buttercup chicken originated on the Island of Sicily. It has a beautiful cup-shaped comb. A great barnyard or show fowl that is sure to please everyone. It is a delicate bird and is not winter hardy as most breeds of chickens are. The Sicilian Buttercup Chicken does not take well to confinement and more of a free range very active chicken. This chicken breed also does not go broody.

This is a very old and rare breed which originated in Belgium. Golden Campines feature a beautiful combination of lustrous black and golden bay to make the distinctive barred feather pattern. They are rather small and lay white eggs. The chicks are the most highly colored we hatch, showing a bright zigzag pattern of black, brown, and white stripes.
Poultry keeping has been practiced in Belgium for a long time; in fact, the Flemish carry the nickname “the chicken eaters.” Two Flemish chicken breeds, Braekel and Campine, are nearly identical and have a common history and ancestry.

Crevecoeur Chickens

The breed gets its name from the village of Crèvecœur en Auge in Normandy, France. “Crève Cœur” translates literally as “broken heart.” Local history sites the origin of the name stems from the land in this region being less fertile than was hoped by farmers moving in to the area and thus breaking the hearts of the peasants. Little is known of the breed’s origins, as it is so old. The Creveceour is very similar in size to the Houdan, but only has four toes and is all black in color. The current US breeding birds is well under 500 and the global population in under 1000 birds.
